John Rutter's The Quest for SATB (with divisions) Oboe and Organ.This poignant anthem was written in memory of the Revd Dr John Hughes (1978-2014) Dean of Jesus College Cambridge. The text combines the nineteenth-century poet and Christian minister George MacDonald's emotive poem Lost and Found with the 'In paradisum' antiphon from the Burial Service in the Liber Usualis. The music is at times ethereal melancholic poignant and life-affirming. The solo Oboe and Organ writing is integral to the emotive character of the piece and the word-painting and angelic chorus moments encourage the listener to reflect on the subject athand.The Quest is featured on the Collegium Records CD The Gift of Life. An orchestration for chamber ensemble (solo Oboe Harp and Strings) is available on hire/rental.

Viola da Gamba Part for Nico Muhly's Malmesbury Motets.   Commissioned for the choir of Malmesbury Abbey Wiltshire by Revd Canon Neill Archer (vicar) and Dr Annie Davis (Lay Precentor). Contemporary English composer singer and Vocal coach Betty Roe is best known for her church and Choral music revue songs music for schools and solo songs like these. This group of three songs sets poems of Langston Hughes concerning the feisty Alberta K Johnson who successfully sees off the census man the minister and Death himself when they come calling.Roe has set the three texts in bluesy jazzy style with delightful sliding and sinister tones to suggest the threat of death. While the score calls for Soprano the highest note is F sharp and the lowest an F below middle C with quite a lot fo time spent in the lower register. A mezzo-Soprano would find this trio ofworks well within range.
